Volume 1 Chapter 1 Becoming A Fisherman

After braving through the city walls of Qiong Yue, Su Su walked towards the east town, upon reaching the east town, she goes ten miles again towards the east, then to her final destination, the Eastern Sea coast. The Eastern Sea beach was broad; the sea was calm and rich in aquatic resources. These were the reasons why this side of the coastal border town was very busy, but also unusually vibrant. The huge catch of aquatic products was being marketed massively and needless to say, a crowd of merchants fully occupies that sizable inn waiting for those products.

In the alley, the small inn’s business was booming, the lobby was full of people. A young man wearing a gray-blue linen blouse with a small felt boy hat walks from the crowded lobby, walking and stopping, as he goes looking around relaxed. He appeared to look like any young man strolling around; no one bothers to look at him twice.

This man was no other than precisely the Su Family’s only daughter, Miss Su Su. Of all the woman in the world, no one can effectively disguise herself as a man as vividly as she can. She spent all her days mingling among soldiers in the military compound. If Miss Su dressed up as a man, no one dares to recognize her first because soldiers normally were uncertain. A common woman dressed as a man would either intentionally or unintentionally put on a rugged acting  and have the graceful look of a scholar. These type of actions made them more noticeable but they never realized their acts attracted greater attention. But for Miss Su Su, she grew up living in the General Manor and in the military compound where men were piled in heaps, she never had to be deliberate in anything. Her gestures and walks were very natural like a man; nothing was artificial that it would question her gender identity.  Anyone who looks at her at this moment, will not make second guesses and would think she was just like any border town young man.

Su Su strolled the streets for a while until she completely determined that the tail following behind was completely thrown off. She then turns around and runs towards the seashore. In fact, since she left the capital, she already sensed she was being followed. Glancing at the tracking technique, it was no doubt a Su Military men. Disguise, costume changes, escaping, she is a connoisseur. Just getting rid of them was as ‘easy as a hand’s turn’. If she does not have this ability, she could have lost them a long time ago but conveniently kept them close at first. If she lost them near the capital city, they could report it back and her mother would personally come out to catch her, drag her back, and she’d lose her chance to run off. Besides, if she lets the family knew she was about to risk leaving the city, they will worry.

Su Su’s reckless achievement was excellent. For a distance of ten miles, she spent just a stick of an incense *(i.e. 15 minutes) running to the Eastern Sea. The endless appearance of the sea and sky allowed people’s heart to have a wide-range goal. The salty sea breeze gently whips her face. At the ebb of the tide’s rhythm, every rising and receding wave washes her heart. It was very comforting and hard to resist not throwing one’s self into its azure embrace.

Su Su took a deep breath and greatly stretched her lazy waist,” Really relaxing!”

Since coming to the Eastern Sea, she certainly was unwilling to just enjoy the magnificent ocean view at the beach. Uncle Ao Tian had said that the Ju Ling Island boat comes here to exchange information and gathers food supply once every three months. In her calculation, the next boat from Ju Ling Island will come after more than a month. She cannot certainly go to the East Sea Garrison Camp to wait; now, how was she going to spend it?

She raised her hand to block the harsh sunshine. Squinting, she saw not far from a small harbor, there were few fishing boats docked there. One of the fishing boats was very large; next to that boat are many people moving onto the ship. Su Su’s eyes gleamed.

Qin Jia, in this small city, was famous; they have about seven or eight big deep sea fishing vessels, which are dependent on the crew’s operation. Therefore, every night in Qin’s family dinner there was no less than 100 crew, but unfortunately, Qin Jia’s old wife gave him only one son and one daughter. Daughter Qin Qian, although she can help her father handle some business, she had to stay behind with her paternal aunt because the trip at sea was inconvenient for her. His son, Qin Yan, was just over fourteen years old and was at the suitable age to go on the ship to sea.

Tis the season of fishing, business was very prosperous and Qin Jia heads to lead the three fishing boats to the West Sea to hunt for fish. That territory was dangerous, naturally, he does not take his son with him. Qin, who manages the household, commands his capable assistant Lao Yu, who has great experience to lead Qin Yan, to go to the sea area that was gentle and deep to catch fish, also because he had very little experience.

It was her younger brother’s first time at the sea, Qin Qian was unsure and so she decided to accompany him. Watching the crew in an orderly inspection of the vessel, preparing the tools, all in good order, Qin Qian’s heart was put at ease.

“Sister, you trick the crew to go sea fishing?”

Behind her a refreshing laughter sounded, Qin Qian quickly looked back and saw a fourteen-year-old boy standing by himself with a pair of bright eyes. Qin Qian’s heart slightly startled, the pupil in her eyes was stunning, but after seeing the youth’s face, Qin Qian put a restraint in her eyes and looked down. She softly replied, “We are going to sea; we are not recruiting crew members.”

Su Su’s eyes flash a touch of sly. With her appearance that looks like ‘seven points similar to a young lady’, although she does dare to be stunning, she will not put the word ‘beauty’ to shame. If people were to stare continuously at her, they cannot help but see the flaws. Her mother deploys soldiers on the field with grass juice wiped on their cheeks to the edge of their eyes. That green ink, however, cannot be washed away by water, but it will slowly fade in a month’s time.

Using that same concept, she looked like she had a terrifying ‘birthmark’ on her face. Most people were embarrassed to have been staring at her face to see the mark but naturally could not because the appearance belongs to the body of a young man.

In actuality, the person before her was that of a young woman that looks like a spirited seventeen-year-old wearing a dark blue simple dress, lining her petite figure, beaming. The woman looks so beautiful with her gentle soft eyes, she should be good and as good as she speaks. Su Su puts pressure on her hat and goes on to say, “Sister, can you let me join?”

“You?” Qin Qian did not think this youth will make such a request. Thinking about how to refuse, a male bystander laughs and says, “We are going deep sea fishing and we will be at sea for at least less than half a month. The sea is not a joke. At such a young age, how you be of help. Even a burst of wind will be able to blow you away.” The crewmen next to him also followed with a laugh.

Su Su learned martial arts since childhood, actually, she was not emaciated, but standing in a group of burly men around, she really seems thin and small. Secretly becoming supercilious, Su Su slightly bows her head and her good voice whispers out, “I heard that one can catch a lot of precious fish while deep sea fishing and can make a lot of money. If I can be in your crew and become a full timer, I can get a good salary; like this, I can obtain medicine for my father and support my family.”

Qin Qian, somewhat touched, softly asked,” What has happened with your father?”

“Father is a blacksmith; when he sprained his waist, the family quickly had no support. Mother’s body is also sickly…” Listening to the side, the juvenile voice lowered. Qin Qian also frowned, she was thinking all the young fella wants were some broken silvers. The look of plea in his eyes and pitiful life experience radiates, then he suddenly lifts his head and say aloud, “I may look thin but my strength is big. If you do not believe, I will show you.” With that, Su Su ran to the side of the ship and waits for a large bamboo basket being loaded onto the ship.

The bamboo basket was filled with fishnets, Su Su holds both ends and carries the basket, and with a push of force, she slowly raised it up.

“Oh!” An old crewman cannot help but laugh, “Boy, he has a lot of energy!” Such a big basket, even these burly men struggled to carry.

Su Su deliberately staggered two steps and puts the basket down. While she was panting, Qin Qian smiles, “You passed .”

Qin Qian on the spot says, “We have to go home, are you not going to go home and say goodbye to your parents……? “

“No, no! I went out and my parents said if I do not make money, don’t come back, so I don’t have to say goodbye. “

Looking at this eager juvenile before her, Qin Qian moved with true compassion. She thought about her younger brother who was of a similar age and this starling birthmark on his face along with his family’s bad circumstances, but the juvenile was still cheerful and generous. Such a dutiful youth. The silver money he was afraid to not get when he needed it right away. Anyway, so many crews, but it will not hurt to add one more. Qin Qian nods, “Well, you’re going out to sea with us!”

*****End Of the Chapter*****

    • Yup, their parents knew those three daughter plan to run from home. And the fathers set their men to follow them, but lost track after few days.
Love the epilogue, especially when prime minister cornered by the emperor and the general to make a decision about their daughters run away plan.
